The starting point for this research-based thesis was a development assignment on staff-family cooperation in a Siun sote enhanced service housing unit for older people. The purpose of the thesis was to develop and improve staff-family cooperation and create a model for involving both parties in the development activity. Another purpose was to collect and describe the experiences, challenges and development areas in staff-family cooperation. This thesis was conducted by using a qualitative research approach. The key concepts in the thesis were the client, the relative, staff-family cooperation, enhanced service housing and inclusion. A questionnaire and learning cafe were used as methods for collecting data. The data was analysed with SWOT and content analysis and the responses were condensed and thematized. The regularity of cooperation and communication initiated by the nurses were identified as development areas in staff-family cooperation, as well as support for the relatives. The role of the family caregiver will play an important role in the implementation of staff-family cooperation. The output provided nursing home staff with a new tool, that is, an updated version of the named nurse model. In the future, it could be researched how the model is implemented and what benefits it brings to the promotion of well-being among the clients....

Abstract The purpose of this thesis was to promote age-friendliness in the municipality of Liperi and to explore the wishes of older concerning the content of the framework for the aforementioned program based on knowledge production and developement process. The thesis was implemented as qualitative research applying the phenomenographic approach. Furthermore, the implementation was working-life oriented research development activity that applied the practices of participatory action research. The data was gathered from older residents in the municipality by using participatory methods. As a result, three main steps, each of them with two or three reinforcing aspects, were identified for of the programme Age-Friendly Liperi. The findings emphasised the importance of the residents’ attitudes towards older people and ageing itself when promoting age-friendliness. By strengthening the inclusion of older people in municipal activities and seeing ageing as an asset, age-friendliness and the position of older people in the community can be improved. This thesis provides a clear structure for the programme Age-Friendly Liperi. The results of this thesis can be utilised to develop age-friendliness at regional, national or international levels. An idea for further research could be to assess and monitor age-friendly practices....

The premise of patient safety is adequate and competent personnel. Finding qualified substitutes in the healthcare sector has become more difficult. In the next few years, the challenges related to labour adequacy will increase due to the large-scale retirement of nurses and the increasing need for the workforce in older people’s services. The purpose of this study was to develop patient safety and the quality of care on Siilainen Rehabilitation Hospital wards in the cases of understaffing or skills shortage. Information for developing practices was gathered from the care workers and supervisors in workshops through the Learning Café method. In the final workshop discussions, a so-called dartboard model was used to clarify the consensus on the possibilities to influence emerging issues at different organizational levels. The material was analysed thematically. The results were development suggestions. More explicit guidelines and practices were desired, specifically concerning night shift staff replacement practices. Multidisciplinary co-operation, teamwork and the atmosphere of the work community were high-lighted in the results as essential factors in coping with understaffing. Unit-based guidelines for prioritizing duties for emergencies were suggested. Task-oriented and teamwork models were highlighted as appropriate models to distribute work in cases of understaffing. As further development proposals, the current pharmaceutical process to speed up the process of obtaining pharmaceutical licenses, unit-specific models for the division of labour in emergencies, and the substitute system for targeting expertise to match the needs of the unit could be reviewed....
